SUPPORT LETTER GUIDELINES

Raising support for a mission trip cam be an 'iffy' subject for some and an insurmountable mountain for others. To help ease the difficulties with raising support for a mission trip, allow us to present the idea of fund rasing from a different angle: what it does for those who give.

The following observations are compiled from People Raising: A Practical Guide to Raising Support by William P. Dillon, pages 3-7:

Why would you want to ask people to participate in rasing funds?
  • It mobilizes a group of people to pray for your mission trip.
  • It enables you as the missionary to trust God in new and stretching ways.
  • It increases the number of Christians who fund mission endeavors.
  • It exposes churches and believers to what is happening on the missions ‘frontline.’
  • It provides opportunity for you to minister to potential supporters.
  • It opens doors for witnessing to unbelievers.
  • How do you go about raising funds?

    Pray

  • Pray that God would bring to mind people who you need to contact.
  • Pray that God would use your letter and your mission trip involvement to begin or deepen a work in their lives.
  • Pray that God would provide opportunities to share with people about your trip and what God is doing in your life.
  • Pray that God would open doors for you to witness.
  • Pray that your letter will be received well.
  • Make a List

  • Co-workers
  • Church members
  • Neighbors
  • Family Members
  • Friends
  • Former Churches
  • Employer (some companies do matching funds)
  • Companies
  • Interest Groups (people interested in country you're going to)
  • Write a Letter

Be sure your letter is simple, to the point, and reflects the following items:

  • Who you are
  • What you are going to do.
  • Why you are going.
  • Funds needed.
  • Where funds need to be sent.
  • Return envelope (stamped).
