ethos – not a big word at first glance, but powerful nonetheless. The meaning of ethos goes beyond group dynamic or a general belief system an individual or a group of people adhere to. ethos is what defines that individual or group of individuals; it is the essence, the DNA, the core of who they are and what they do based upon what they have come to believe either about themselves or about something outside of themselves. ethos does not change with different sets of circumstances; it stays constant, focus, and is continuously guided by the set of core beliefs the individual or group of individuals has made their own.
At LIFE, part of our mission in Las Vegas is to make disciples, followers of Christ, who are defined by loving God, uniting with other believers, serving the world, and entrusting the Gospel with others. Since this is the mission we are about, ethos is what defines this group of believers based upon their belief of these four essential marks of a disciple of Christ.
When it comes to serving the world, LIFE is not just an organization that addresses needs as they come up, but serving the world is a part of who the individuals connected with LIFE are. It is more than just addressing needs, but working actively together at serving one another within the body and serving the world around us, whether that’s the immediate neighborhoods around LIFE, co-workers, family members, guests that come to LIFE.
An illustration for this kind of phenomenon is found in nature: when studying ants, one quickly comes to realize that while they have a queen (or several queens), each ant works to contribute to the collective of that particular ant kingdom.
When it comes to LIFE, it is our belief that God purposefully places individuals into local groups of believers with gifts, talents, and passions that characterize the individual in order to further His plans and purposes He seeks to accomplish through the local church. With that understanding in mind, we want to challenge everyone who has come to LIFE and is a part of LIFE to discover what he/she is passionate about, is gifted in, and discover together how God would like to utilize him/her at LIFE and beyond. This is what has the makings of a beautiful ethos, where service is the natural, reasonable outflow of what one has come to believe about himself/herself.
